Tasting Notes

"88 Points...Highly Recommended" - California Grapevine

The 2006 Syrah from Vogelzang Vineyard begins with deep, layered aromas of plum, black cherry, coffee and leather. The palate takes a brighter turn, with lively, juicy flavors of dried cherry, raspberry and blackberry with accents of sweet oak. A dusty, terroir-driven quality joins fresh acidity on the finish.

Vogelzang Vineyard

Vogelzang Vineyard unfolds along rolling hills at the foot of Los Padres National Forest in the eastern Santa Ynez Valley. This winegrowing frontier, which is known as Happy Canyon, is the warmest growing area in coastal Santa Barbara County. Here, the valley loam soil is riddled with river cobble deposited by ancient waterways. Vogelzang Vineyard’s special convergence of sun and earth yields a sleek, high- toned Syrah with spicy red fruit flavors.

Winemaking

After gentle destemming, the must was cold soaked for five days prior to fermentation to capture the fruit’s pure character and color. Fermentation was initiated with D254 yeast, a Rhône Valley strain that enhances mouthfeel and mid-palate richness. The pomace was pressed in a traditional wooden basket press to ensure pure flavor and color extraction. The wine was aged for 18 months in French oak barrels.
