Estate Vineyards

The character of the vineyard is ultimately what we aim to put in the bottle—a pure sense of place that reflects the specific origins of the wine. Accordingly, our wines come from our own estate vineyards as well as select local vineyards that boast remarkable conditions for Rhône varietals.

Santa Ynez Valley
If you spend an afternoon with us anytime from spring through fall, you will see what makes the Santa Ynez Valley one of the world’s top spots for growing Rhône varietals. The picturesque terrain is rolling and rugged. The air is warm, but also reliably tempered by marine air billowing inland from the nearby Santa Barbara coastline. The soil is rough and rocky, challenging the vines to produce small, intensely flavored grapes.

The valley’s fortuitous convergence of sun and earth ultimately creates a Mediterranean-like terroir that enables our Rhône varietals to achieve exquisite ripeness, balance and structure.

Our Vineyards
We own two vineyards in the Santa Ynez Valley—the Curtis Estate and Rock Hollow Vineyard. These estate vineyards are the heart of our winemaking program.

The Curtis Estate Vineyard is adjacent to our winery at the corner of Zaca Station and Foxen Canyon roads in the heart of the valley. Here, amid an oak-studded nook, the well-drained soils of sandy loam and limestone impart intensity and complexity to our fruit. This sheltered setting acts as a trap for afternoon warmth, which slowly yields to cool coastal breezes for optimal ripening of the grapes.

Rock Hollow Vineyard is located in the hamlet of Ballard, just over the hill from our winery. This small vineyard occupies a southeast-facing slope, where gentle exposure to the elements ensures a long, steady growing season. This orientation is enhanced by the vineyard’s rocky soils, rolling topography, and excellent natural drainage, which combine to yield a complex, intensely flavored Syrah with a velvety black fruit character.
